Urban Livelihood Interventions

TNULM focuses on interventions that have a positive and definitive impact on the livelihoods of the urban poor, thereby bringing them out of the poverty trap, and has been piloting several initiatives for livelihood improvement across various categories of vulnerability.

City livelihoods Centers (CLC)

Promotion of livelihoods of the urban poor is one of the key objectives of Tamil Nadu Urban Livelihoods Mission. Urban poor, either as individual or as a member of the SHG, is encouraged to undertake revenue generation activities under TNULM. Though the urban SHGs excel in production of quality goods and services, they seek support in finding viable marketing opportunities and linkages. City Livelihoods Centre is a platform for the urban poor where they can offer their goods and services in an organized manner to the potential consumers from the urban community. The urban poor can access information and business support services as and when required. In simple words, CLC can be described as “ONE STOP SHOP” for the people who are seeking services and for the people who are providing products and services.

Green Initiatives of Urban SHGs

These Self Help Groups (SHGs) intend to develop a relationship between women’s empowerment and environmental management. It also ensures how women’s role in the promotion of environmental sustainability.

Enterprise Development and Promotion

The promotion of viable enterprises is an important component of the entire process of SHG promotion. It synergises the positive features of savings and credit habits to set the stage for the subsequent establishment of income-generating micro-enterprises

Livelihood Opportunities in 13 Coastal Districts-based Urban SHGs

The introduction of SHG leased a new life to the fishing community in the coastal area, as it provided a window of opportunity for these men and women. Through them, their families, achieve upward social mobility. Upward social mobility or empowerment of the community usually takes place in three stages, viz. motivation by experts, a kind of anticipatory mental social mobility and actual actions.

Piloting for Motorized Vending Carts for Urban SHG

Street vending provides a source of self-employment, and thus acts as a measure of urban poverty alleviation without major Government intervention. They have a prominent place in the urban supply chain and are an integral part of the economic growth process within urban areas. A pilot project for providing motorized vending carts for Street vendor-based SHGs is carried out to uplift the economic position.

Special Interventions for Rag Pickers

Total Waste Management Services has helped waste pickers to unlock their entrepreneurial zeal and potential. Model of operation of the service is franchise based, where waste pickers become entrepreneurs and lead their unit in providing services

SHG-based Micro Enterprises Development and Promotion

Special Interventions for Nomadic Tribes - Narikuravas

Nomadic Tribes and Semi Nomadic Tribes are one of the most deprived and economically weaker communities in India. A livelihood initiative to enhance productivity growth in key livelihood sectors for employment generation for DNT/NT/SNT communities through investments in institutional support and technical assistance is being carried out.

Urban Serve TM - Skilled Home Service Provisioning in Urban Areas

Service Platform for Blue Collar Professionals of Urban Tamil Nadu that ensures availability of Professional service to the urban population of Tamil Nadu and ensures Access to Employment opportunities and Incremental income for Service Professionals from TNULM Urban Poor SHG Network.

TNULM - City Livelihood Centres

The objective of the City Livelihoods Centre (CLC) is to provide a platform whereby the urban poor can market their services and access information and other benefits. CLCs will act as a “one-stop shop” for those seeking services from the informal sector as well as for the urban poor promoting their services and products.

TNULM Livelihood Interventions

Livelihood provisioning is a set of relief-based interventions that involve providing food and meeting other essential needs for households to maintain nutritional levels and save lives.

In heritage skill of pottery-making art, growing demand for fashionable earthen pots, new business opportunities, and growing border trade relationships with the neighbouring state and countries, the community pottery skills are nurtured and provided with the tools and platform to create profitable enterprises.

Urban Basket TM - Marketing and Branding of TNULM SHG Products

A platform where SHGs can monetise by showcasing the SHG products and getting a cross-border enquiry for supplies. TNULM supports the groups through marketing and branding assistance on the platform.
